First Time at the Opera?

Never been to an opera? You’re in exactly the right place. Opera is a story told through music: big emotions, beautiful voices and a live orchestra, all happening in front of you. You don’t need to know the music, speak Italian or own a tuxedo. All you need is a ticket!

What to Expect

The questions everyone asks before their first time.

What should I wear?

Whatever makes you comfortable. Opera Modesto has no dress code. Some people dress up for a night out, others come straight from work, and both are welcome.

Will I understand it?

Yes! When an opera is sung in another language, English supertitles are projected above the stage, like subtitles at a movie. Some of our productions, like The Little Prince, are sung in English.

How long is it?

It depends on the show. A full opera like La Traviata runs about 2½ hours with an intermission. Concerts and family productions are shorter. Each show page lists its run time.

When should I arrive?

Plan to arrive 20–30 minutes early to park and find your seat. For main stage operas, come an hour early for our free Opera Insights talk. It’s a short, friendly introduction to the story and music.

When do I clap?

Clap after a big song (called an aria) when the music stops, at the end of each act, and at curtain call. Feel free to shout “Bravo!” (or “Brava!”). If you’re unsure, just follow the crowd.

Can I bring my kids?

Yes! The Little Prince and our Around the World Concert are perfect first experiences for young audiences.

Anything else I should know?

Please silence your phone. Photos and recording aren’t allowed during the performance, but take as many as you’d like at intermission and curtain call.

Where to Start

Not sure which show to pick? Here’s a guide.

  • Bringing kids or want something in English? The Little Prince. It’s magical, family-friendly and sung in English.
  • Want a taste of everything? The Around the World Concert. Music in many languages, with performers sharing their own stories.
  • Looking for a festive night out? Season of Song, our holiday gala with dinner, wine and live performances.
  • Ready for the Main Stage? La Traviata. Verdi’s love story is full of melodies you already know, and it’s one of the most popular operas ever written.
