Opera Modesto’s Summer Opera Institute (SOI) for teens is a conservatory level training program for youth artists graduating from the 8th to 12th grades. The program consists of workshops designed to enhance self-confidence, leadership and performing skills. Classes include specialized vocal training, language pronunciation, performance skills, International Phonetic Alphabet, dance, drama, workshops by international guest artists, and much more. The SOI concludes with a concert of staged operatic excerpts in a variety of languages.

“Before joining SOI, I wasn’t confident in speaking in front of people let alone singing. But with the support of all of all of these wonderful people. I found myself again. SOI is such a wonderful opportunity that has caring people who want to help others grow.”

“I have been participating in the Summer Opera Institute for four years now, and I can’t imagine what my summers would look like without it. Each year I experience significant growth as a singer, but I also grow in confidence, character, and friendship. SOI has changed my life!”

“Participating in SOI has offered me a memorable experience that has shaped me as a musician, a student, and a person. This is from the perspective of a college student who has gone through the rigor of a university-level voice program and understands the expectations of being a music major. Within two weeks, I got a hands-on, unique perspective on the world of opera and other creative pursuits that elevate the art of music and storytelling. I got a comprehensive, dynamic, and fun opera education and, as a result, became a much more confident music student. I’ll carry this experience with me throughout college and beyond. Thank you, SOI.”
